The East Coast Lifestyle

Artist's Statement

MORIAH MACKENZIE: PHOTOGRAPHER

I have always had a passion for photography. When I was younger, I was told that I had an eye for photography, and now I finally believe that it is true. There is a difference between a photo and a photograph; a photo is just an image, and a photograph captures a memory and a story. This series is called “The East Coast Lifestyle.” It shows life in the Maritimes, and how they depend greatly on tourism, and fishing. Nova Scotia is best known for its high tides, its lobster, and its fish.

The first photograph is the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse; the lighthouse attracts fifty-thousand people per year. The second photograph shows two lobster traps stacked vertically; lobster fishing generates $750 million per year for the local economy. The third is a harbor scene with typical berthing of local fishing and lobster boats.

This series means a lot to me, as Nova Scotia is where my parents lived for 3 years. My mother worked as a teacher a few kilometers away from Peggy’s Cove, while my father studied at Dalhousie Law School. The lighthouse itself means a lot to me. It is a reminder to me, that God is the light in the darkness. In the past year, there has been a lot of darkness in my life. I got through it because I know God is always there for me.

Through all the photos I took in Nova Scotia, I could see God throughout all of them, but these three photographs stood out to me the most. All three of the photos fit together, like a puzzle and they tell a story, the East Coast lifestyle.
